Benefits of Home Ownership

As parents, one of the most important things we can do for our children is to support them on their journey to a self sufficient life that has security, safety and helps them plan for their future.

The thought of owning a home is a very exciting one, and it should be, the benefits of home ownership are numerous! We have done some research on this put together a list of the some benefits of homeownership that you may not have considered:
  • Building Equity - In many cases when you rent, you’re paying off a mortgage that belongs to someone else. Basically, you’re helping to create equity for someone else, instead of yourself. You have to live somewhere, and in most cases, you have to pay to live there. Why not pay to live somewhere that is creating a very valuable asset at the same time?
  • Payment Stability - Landlords can increase the rent as much as the law allows every single year. And while mortgage rates aren’t always steady, you can opt for 5-year fixed terms where you’ll know exactly how much you have to pay for that period of time, making it a more stable option.
  • Return on Investment - Owning a home can be an amazing return on investment and can potentially help you afford your next home, should you want to move up.
  • Make it your Own - You can remodel, rennovate, paint, or make any other improvements you want in a home you own.
  • Family Stability - When you buy a home and make it your own, you are setting the stage for decades of childhood memories and family get-togethers. The sense of nostalgia that comes with owning a home and watching your family grow with it is immeasurable. You’ll also create a source of financial security later in life when the mortgage is gone and you have this valuable asset.
  • Example for Children - Owning a home sets a strong example for children. A 2012 study commissioned by Habitat for Humanity Toronto came to positive conclusions in its assessment of the social impact of housing. After achieving homeownership, 95% of respondents said their families were stronger, 81% reported an improvement in their children’s social life and 76% reported an improvement in their children’s grades.
  • More Privacy - Owning a home offers more privacy (and sometimes less noise) than having a roommate, a landlord that lives above you, renting from parents, or apartment living.
  • Building a Strong Credit History - Paying a mortgage builds credit which will be helpful in the future for getting other loans to buy a car, make home improvements, or pay for other major expenses.
Many homeowners feel a great sense of pride because owning a home can establish independence and it is often as or more affordable than renting!
