You’re Selling the House - With Me In It?!

You have many rights as a tenant but that doesn’t mean you’re secure in having the same landlord for your entire tenancy. Your landlord can choose to sell the home with you still listed as tenants. What are your rights when it comes to selling the place you’re temporarily calling home?

Yes, your landlord is allowed to place the home you live in up for sale, whenever they please. They cannot evict you because they are selling.

But when and if it can be sold comes down to the buyers. If the buyers are willing to assume you as tenants, the home can be sold whenever. If the buyers are not willing to assume you as tenants than your landlord must wait until your lease is up to sell.

So, what if the buyer assumes you but you don't want a new landlord. Can you get out of your lease?

Can the new land lord evict you after purchasing the property?

You are still held to your lease contract with the new owner, they cannot evict you until your lease is up and you are required to fulfill your contract. If you wish to get out of your contract early you must discuss it with your new landlord.

Best case for you is to buy your own home. Sometimes the stress of renting isn't worth it.
